Section 1 - How to Enroll
How many schools can I apply to each year?
You can apply to as many schools as you are interested in. Within the Newark Enrolls system, you can select up to eight (8) schools in your application. If you are applying through the Newark Common App, you can list up to five (5) schools. For schools that do not participate in the Newark Enrolls or Newark Common App systems, you can apply to each school individually and there is no limit on how many schools you apply to.
Can anyone apply to these schools?
All families that reside within the city of Newark are eligible to apply to any school included on the My Schools Newark explore tool! Newark district schools are only open to Newark residents. Most charter schools located in Newark prioritize Newark students, but students living outside Newark are also eligible to attend if space remains available. For more information, please review each school's profile on My Schools Newark school explorer as each school has different requirements.
How do I know if a school participates in Newark Enrolls or Newark Common App systems?
When using the My Schools Newark school explorer, the school profile will indicate if the school currently participates in Newark Enrolls or Newark Common App, and will direct you to those sites.
Can I apply to some schools that participate in Newark Enrolls and some schools that do not participate in Newark Enrolls?
Of course you can! For the schools that you are interested in applying to that participate in the Newark Enrolls system, you can visit the Newark Enrolls website here and apply by ranking those Newark Enrolls participating schools. For schools that do not participate in the Newark Enrolls system, you can visit a school’s profile in My School Newark school explorer here and click on the Apply Now button to go to that school’s application.
How do I know what schools to apply to?
Selecting a school for your student is a very important decision. You should research the schools that you are interested in to learn as much as you can before you apply. Things to consider researching are arrival/dismissal times, distance to and from your home, after school activities and all subjects that are important to you and your family. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, this is the perfect time for them!
How can I learn more about the schools available to me?
You can use the My Schools Newark school explorer to learn general information about all. You can also review our Calendar of Events for upcoming enrollment events for each school so that you can attend! Also, feel free to reach out to schools directly via phone or email with your questions regarding enrollment.
Are there age requirements for attending school?
Within the Newark Enrolls system, please see below for age requirements for PK3 - Kindergarten:
PK3 - students must turn 3 by October 1st of the calendar year
PK4 - students must turn 4 by October 1st of the calendar year
Kindergarten - students must turn 5 by October 1st of the calendar year
For schools that do not participate in the Newark Enrolls system, please visit their profile the school explorer or reach out to schools directly.
I’m not sure where to begin!
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when exploring a new website. A great place to start would be the School Explorer where you can see a listing of all available schools and filter them by all the categories that are meaningful to you such as school type and grade levels. Another section to visit is the Calendar of Events where you can view and sign up for enrollment events happening at schools all over Newark!

What is the next step after I bookmark schools that I am interested in?
You can use your list of saved schools to start the application process for each of the schools on your list. For all of the schools on your list that participate in the Newark Enrolls system, you can apply to those schools on the Newark Enrolls application in order of preference. The Newark Enrolls website can be found here. For schools with individual applications, you can visit their school profiles to be connected to their application process page and begin the process for each of those schools.
I've applied to schools for my child: When will I find out the results?
Dates for informing parents of decisions vary by school. Newark Enrolls matches will be released on April 18th - check newarkenrolls.org for more information. Decision dates for Essex County Schools of Technology can be found here. For other schools, please contact the school directly for more information. I have not yet applied to school for my child and need a new school for next year. What can I do?
For Newark Enrolls schools, the application will reopen on April 25th. At that time you can visit newarkenrolls.org to apply. For other schools, please contact the school directly to find out if there is still space available and how to apply.
